KY History Resources
For more than 40 years, the Kentucky Heritage Council / State Historic Preservation Office has been assisting individuals, communities and local governments with making historic preservation an important component of comprehensive community planning and economic development. Making a concerted effort to preserve this heritage and the built environment is integral to building successful, thriving communities.
The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) was formed in 1836 by a group of prominent Kentuckians intent on preserving the history of the Commonwealth. We are a membership organization with members from Kentucky and around the world. We are part of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet; have full American Alliance of Museums accreditation; are a Smithsonian affiliate; and endorse the History Relevance statement.
Preservation Kentucky was formed in 1998 as an educational and advocacy nonprofit by Commonwealth Preservation Advocates, a lobbying organization founded in 1987 to champion preservation friendly legislation at the local, state and federal levels.
Preservation Kentucky’s mission is to preserve and connect Kentuckians to their heritage, and make Kentucky communities stronger, healthier and economically sustainable. Our goals are to promote preservation as the proven economic driver it is for community stabilization, revitalization, heritage tourism and job creation; and to help Kentuckians appreciate, maintain and protect their heritage.

The Blue Grass Trust (BGT) was founded in 1955 by a spirited group of Lexington citizens who were determined to save the John Wesley Hunt residence at 201 North Mill Street in Gratz Park from demolition. The BGT serves as the region’s leading advocacy organization for all preservation-related matters. Since the time of its formation, the BGT has endeavored to create public awareness of the benefits of historic preservation and to serve as advocates for the preservation of the historic places of the Bluegrass.
Today, the Trust continues to provide valuable leadership, education and inspiration to the preservation movement in Lexington, Central Kentucky and throughout the state through our advocacy, the BGT plaque program, BGT deTours, Preservation Matters magazine, seminars, walking tour brochures, and more. As the region’s leading historic preservation organization, we work diligently to fulfill our mission of education, service and advocacy.
The Kentucky Trust for Historic Preservation Inc., was founded in 1998 by a dedicated group of volunteer preservationists who recognized that a private, non-profit organization is able to quickly stabilize and secure endangered properties in many situations where public agencies and advocacy groups cannot.
We encourage you to join us. Our focus is protecting and preserving endangered landmarks -- and nobody does it better. The Trust has saved dozens of historic buildings, and with your participation and support we will be able to save ever more of Kentucky's architectural heritage.
We welcome partnerships with community groups and individuals to find solutions for endangered landmarks in your community.
The Historic Homes Foundation, Inc. (HHF) was chartered in 1957 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization to purchase, preserve and display historic sites and to advance education, culture and the arts in Kentucky.
HHF presents three unique properties, each offering a window into a different aspect of Kentucky's past. Each property is open to the public year-round for tours, public events and educational programming.
Fundraising activities for each home are hosted throughout the year for the benefit of the respective historic property. These funds help support essential needs, such as general operating expenses, educational programming and preservation activities.
